Are You Minding Your Own SME Business?

By 29th February 2016Uncategorized

According to research by the Department for Business Innovation and Skills (BIS)*, only 50% of UK SME employers access any form of business support. Business owners say they don’t know where to go for help, information or small business advice; they have doubts about the benefits, some concerns about the quality of support providers and are reluctant to self-fund.

Yet businesses that do access business support or business advice report significant benefits.

Another statistic for you is that in 80% of start ups, the business owner or MD has never had any experience of running a company before starting up their own. Any successful business owner knows that the day to day reality means tackling every business discipline at some point; Marketing, Sales, HR, Finance, Operations, and lest you forget, you’ll be buying the coffee too!

So typically, business owners or partners focus on four or five areas where they excel. Areas where business owners say they often need support from external business advisers are

• Marketing
• Business planning and strategy
• People management
• Policies and processes – HR, Health & Safety,
• Finance (getting and managing)

For many of us, experiencing new challenges, short-term crises and being thrown in at the deep end are often the norm. Some of us will thrive, but it can also mean that some may not be entirely comfortable. By using an external adviser or mentor for your business, there’s an opportunity to get some short-term help, to learn and to plan how to do things differently.

An experienced adviser brings a new point of view and by rolling up their sleeves, can support you through some of the practical challenges you face, day to day. Support can be light touch, or it could be having an adviser working on a tightly-defined project to streamline part of your operation with a clear outcome delivered to a deadline.
